Simurghiade

Tiamat. The female monster of original chaos.

I cannot be told how to behave.

I am free and rebellious.

I wouldn’t know how to be sage.

In this place chosen for rebirth from no one.

Only from myself like the Simurgh of my

homeland.

Of my homelands. I’ve understood that I was

not formed from a single civilisation.

First garden. Pishon and Gihon. Two seas

encircling the initial cradle. The Tigris. The

Euphrates. This Tigris. The first murder. The

bloody invasions. The Assyrians who don’t

want to be forgotten. The Assyrians. Their

cry. Should we understand? With sounds,

tones that grate. The ears of the deaf West.

The Earth shipwrecked by such carnage. I’m

not alone in denouncing it.

My face has the features of the whole of

humanity and its diversities. Slanting eyes, full

lips. And faces of varied roundness. And

brown skins of assorted tones.
